David L. Estes 1817-1850+David L. Estes remained in East Tennessee when Achsa moved her family to Missouri. He was apparently apprenticed to a brick mason, and worked at that trade in Knoxville and Tazwell, Tennessee. His wife was the daughter of one of his fellow workers. He wanted to move to Missouri or Indiana according to his letters, but died suddenly after 1850. His widow did make the move, and apparently lived with Achsa until she remarried. [envelope] Mr. T. J. Estes Springfield, Missouri Springfield, Mo. Tazwell, Claborn County, Tennessee Dear brotherI am blest with the opportunity of writing to you to let you all know that we are all well at present and hoping these few lines may find you in the same state of health. I wrote you a letter in the spring and I have had no answer from you yet. I have thought you all were sick. I would have wrote to you sooner but still wated for you to write to me and I have quit looking for any letter from you. I would like to see you all again and be with you all but it seems as hard for me to start to move to that country as it is to fly. But I have stop all my business and am a trying to wind up my business this Summer so that I can move to some new country. I do want to start to move about the first of September if I can get ready. Mary's people are very much against me moving to that country on acount of sickness. They want me to move to the south Alabama. They know that I was for my I shall start next week to Kentucky and through the India to look for me a place to move. I do intend to see where I am going to light before I jump. It is mutch easier for me to go by my self. My expense won't be much than when I start to move. I know when I am a going to move and know where I can noo the cost. I am afraid that a new country wont do for my business yet awhile but Land will be getting higher. Wesley C. Chithum wants me to buy land here and give up moving any and I am not satisfied here. I can't content my self in this country a tale for that. I wont stay here. I can't make fast enough and when I earn it I can't get it without suing for it. I maid two hundred and twenty-two a month clear of all expens and I can't be satisfied with it. I workd day and night, hot and cold, rain or shine. It never stop, it keep a coming. Now is my time to make and now is my time to move if I ever do move. Let I want you to write to me and write me the best news that you can. I don't care wheather it be the truth or not. Give me a f of that country, and write it as though you had wrote the truth for I want to move to that country this fall and are all against me moving to that country. They say it is sickley. Corn is worth 50 per bushel. C flour .600 per barrel and all the produce is up. They was one hundred volenteers from a Tuesday for Texas. I saw more men crying that day then I ever saw before. We had the greatest time h That I can now in all my life. I was at Phinas Spangess Lost neck All at that timnary non of girls was marred yet. Would like to hear from R. Ray and Susan and see them. I have the smartest wife in prettist wife that walks on land. Nothing more at present but shal remain you affectinate son tel death.
The date for the above letter may be deduced from the mention of volunteers going to Texas. This must be the war with Mexico, and would be 1846-1847.
