James Oliver Estes 1849-1881

A Short History of the Life of My Brother Jim Estes,
Deceased Father of Thomas Pascal Estes

Your father, while a small boy of seven, had whooping cough and measles both at the same time; his two younger brothers had the same trouble and they both died in about two weeks after taking the whooping cough and measles. There were just the three boys, and Jim came so near passing away at this time, his parents thought they would lose him too.

He never did get over it fully, although he lived to be a man. He was never able to do hard work or physical labor. he had to go into some business that did not require hard labor.

He was in the mercantile business for a number of years but had to give this up when he contracted tuberculosis as a result of his childhood illness. He did not live long after this. He had hemorrhage of the lung and passed away in a short time.

He and your mother were married about the year 1868, I'm not sure about the exact date but it was about that time. To them were born two girls and one boy. The only child living when Jim died was Thomas Pascal Estes, now a man about 62, living in Auburn, California.
